"On the Esplanade to the south of the museum, children play hide and seek between the sculptures. I push open the imposing wooden door and I’m struck by the grand staircase. At the top, in an Art nouveau setting of copper, earthenware and stained glass, three frescos by Léo-Paul Robert are bathed in a soft late-afternoon light. I tiptoe into the first room; the museum is silent. Facing me are large 19th century romantic canvasses by Neuchâtel painters. The second room responds with works created a century later, still in large format, but significantly less figurative. This abstraction lets the mind escape."
